Jesus is faithful, worthy of great honor, and sovereign.  Moses was faithful as a servant in God’s house, but Messiah is faithful as a Son over God’s house.

Hebrews 3: 2-6 provides three attributes about Jesus.  Jesus is an apostle and high priest.  He is worthy of great honor.  Jesus is faithful.  He gives us the hope and courage and a means of finding our standing in God’s house.

This week we talked about fixing our thoughts on Jesus.  This passage urges us to strive to focus on Him and be like Him.  If we want to grow in own spirit, we need to walk in His steps.  If you are a Christian, you have been called by God and your soul saved by your faith in Jesus Christ.

1John was written to the saints, the saved people.  The purpose was to call believers to fellowship with God and other believers.  How do we fellowship?  By loving one another.  If you are Christ love one another.  John repeats the commandment we were given, and in that obedience, we will find joy, rest and peace.

Because of His Incarnation, Jesus takes actions that demonstrate His superiority to angels.  He suffered death so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone-Hebrews 2:9.  He defeated the devil and served as the atonement for the sins of the people.  Because of Jesus suffering, he is able to aid the those who are tempted.

We as Christians have eye witness accounts according to scripture that Jesus died, was buried, and was raised on the third day.  He appeared not only to the disciples  but also to more than five hundred brethren.  He explained to them the prophets and how God’s word foretold his coming.   The whole Old Testament points toward Christ’s life, death and resurrection.  When we receive the gospel in our hearts, we can fully submit to Him.  He is life changing, and today by the grace of God we can submit to salvation and the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

We must always pay close attention to avoid walking away from the faith and becoming a “Charles Templeton”.  The Old Covenant Law was spoken through angels and was certain.  Binding laws with just penalties and punishments were spoken through Moses, angels, and prophets.  The New Covenant message of salvation, spoken through the Lord, is even more certain.  It was confirmed by the apostles and eye witnesses.  We must cling to Jesus to avoid drifting.

There are two resons we must pay close attention to the gospel so we do not drift away.  We need to avoid docternal drift, moral drift, and practical drift.  Many either fall away or never were in the faith.  Those who truly receive the Word, perservere in their hearts and bring forth fruit in their lives.  Although faith and repentance are gracious gifts of God-however that is to be understood-an individual must himself act in repentance and faith to be saved, for Jesus commanded repentance and belief.

When God brought Jesus into the world he said, “Let all God’s angels worship him”.  God made Jesus superior to the angels.  He is superior because He is the Son of God, the angels worship Him, and the angels serve Him.  We are reminded that angels are ministering spirits, but Jesus’ authority is established over ALL of creation.

Jesus is supreme because He fulfills three roles as the Son of God.  Jesus is the final revelation by God.  He is the full representation of God.  He is also the finished redeemer with God.  Jesus is the heir of the universe and divine by nature.  He has the radiance of God’s glory and is an exact representation of His being.  Jesus shines all that is God.  After he was crucified and raised to purify sin, he sat down at the right hand of God.  In the old testament God spoke through Moses and the prophets, in the final days God spoke through His Son.

Membership has benefits and blessings.  When you are a member of a church you are committed to supporting and encouraging the ministries of the church.  Members also build each other up in their faith and walk with Christ.  Public commitment and profession of your faith is good, but let’s face it, Membership is ACTIVE involvement in the body of Christ.

Why am I a member of a church?  What does being a member mean?  In the New Testament, churches are universal and invisible.  The church is made up of all people who are followers of Christ.  Paul went to the churches and wrote many letters to the congregations to guide them toward two purposes: carrying out the commands of Christ and glorifying God.  Being a member of a modern day church allows followers of the Lord Jesus Christ to voluntarily unite and not only fellowship with other believers, but also study the word of God and gain a greater love for the Lord.  We serve  God, not numbers.  Our growth as a church comes from inside the hearts of the members, not the population in the pews.

As we end our NEW series, we are reminded of the characteristics of true Christian love.  Jesus laid down his life for us.  Would you lay down your life for your friends?  What about a stranger?  True Christian love is sacrificial.  You can’t love God if you don’t love God’s children.  Love cannot be met on Sundays only.  Fellowship must take place throughout our lives each day.   True Christian love is also practical.  The old sayings “practice what you preach” and “actions speak louder than words”, those are true examples of how a Christian should relate in his/her life.  If we help others using the resources we are so richly blessed with, care & concern will become the selfless acts we live out day to day as we actually “do life” together!

Being a “new” creation in Christ changes our purpose toward others.  This world is not our home, our true citizenship is in heaven.  We must then live each day as ambassadors of Christ and speak clearly the word of God.  Are we blessed?  Sure.  We need to use those blessings to help others.  Our representation never stops just because we work 9-5 or have other tasks outside of church.  We are Christians 24/7 and we need to remember that.  The means of our reconciliation is the work of Jesus on the cross.  He suffered in our place.  He swapped accounts with us and exchanged our sin for righteous salvation.  Our message to the world should be clear, Be reconciled to God.

When we have a “new” outlook towards others, we don’t view people the same.  We begin to drop the cliches of the way the world views others, and we see them simply one of two ways: saved or lost.  Great burdens are lifted when we truly follow Jesus, we are liberated, but not due to anything we have done.  It is from the work Jesus did, one time and once for all.  We can never be good enough for God, but Jesus is!  He gives us the ministry of reconciliation.  Though Jesus Christ we receive amnesty for our sins.  We are then appointed to go forth with the message of reconciliation to others.  Continuing in our NEW series, we press on in living out of love for Christ.  Out with the old, in with the NEW.

When faced with hardships we need to remember to always trust in God.  His love is steadfast and compassionate.  We may find ourselves struggling with sin, but our reassurance comes from knowing that God’s mercies are new everyday.  We must continue to seek God while we wait on Him.  Waiting isn’t an idle task giving us the unlimited time to sit and do nothing.  We must continue to pray, serve, and trust in God.

Brother Larry Spry, former interim pastor and registrar at Calvary Bible College, filled in for the pastor this weekend.  He continued his sermon series from James reminding us of the quality so few can exhibit without fault: patience.  We are reminded not to grumble and complain about our circumstances, but to wait humbly on the Lord.  We learn that we are not kept here on this earth to judge, but to be patient in all  which in turn will build our character the way God sees fit.  We once again flip back to Job, a man who loved God and still lost everything.  We are reminded of the compassion and mercy God showed to him when he realized he couldn’t explain his situation.  He had to trust in the Lord.
